Remember how 直 can also mean "direct?" Well, if you directly adjoin two things, their connection will become direct too. Nothing will stand between them!
That said, 直接 isn't limited to physical contact. In fact, it's more often used when someone does something without going through a middle step or person, whether it's in communication, action, or connection. For example, if you say 直接聞いた (I heard it directly), it means you got the info straight from the source.
