Jomon
Jomon People, Ancient Japanese
proper noun
Rope writing was used during the Jomon period, a time in ancient Japanese history when people decorated pottery with rope.
This is a jukugo word, which usually means on'yomi readings from the kanji. You learned two different on'yomi readings for 文, so here's a mnemonic to help you remember which one to use:
The Jomon period was so long ago that monsters (もん) probably still walked the earth. You know, mythological beasts like ogres and demons and stuff. Why else would the Jomon people have made all those wild-looking clay figurines? Those are definitely monsters, no doubt about it.
縄文時代にもおしゃぶりみたいなものはあったのかな。
I wonder if there was the equivalent of pacifiers in the Jomon period.
