If you have a tenacious writing brush, you are doing a lot of writing. Also, if you write for a magazine you probably write a ton too, because they have to come out with new issues every week or month.
This is a jukugo word that uses the on'yomi reading of the kanji, but both readings are slightly altered: しつ gets shorted to しっ, and ひつ gets rendaku'd to ぴつ. If you're having trouble with the rendaku, just imagine fervently writing page after page until your pits (ぴつ) start to reek. Mmm, smell those musky pits. That's the smell of someone who's just poured their heart and sweat out onto the page!
