Friend
Companion
noun
A friend that you attain is your friend. This is the most common way to say "friend," so learn it if you want to make any!
You may have encountered this word before since it's so common, but technically both kanji here are using readings you haven't learned yet, so here's a mnemonic:
The friend you're meeting tomorrow (とも) is Dutch (だち). You know this because a reminder from your calendar app tells you: "Tomorrow: Dutch friend." Tomorrow, the Dutch friend will come over, and they'll say hallo to you in Dutch — or will they just say hello in a Dutch accent? It's never quite clear to you… What is clear is that tomorrow, the Dutch friend is coming.
彼は私の友達です。
He is my friend.
よかったら、私と友達になってくれませんか?
If you don't mind, would you like to be my friend?
友達の友達から聞いたことなんだけど、ビエトってヤクザらしいよ!
I heard from a friend of a friend that Viet is a yakuza!
