If you self explode, it means you're blowing up yourself, and probably taking others with you. This is a suicide bomb.
自爆 usually refers to suicide bombing in a military or terrorist context. Figuratively, it can also mean ruining your own situation through careless actions, like scoring an own goal in soccer.
