Masterless Samurai

A person who wanders because their lord was killed is known as a ronin, or a masterless samurai. Now they're just like the rest of us, but they can't stop wandering because they have nowhere they belong.
In modern Japan, 浪人 refers to students who failed their university entrance exams and are waiting for the next chance to try again.
This is a jukugo word that uses the on'yomi readings of the kanji. You should be able to read this on your own.
受験に失敗し、浪人生活に突入しました。
I failed the exam and entered the life of a failed student.
