When you cut off the edge of a cliff, it creates another that is even steeper and more sheer than the one before — it becomes a sheer cliff. This is the kind of precipice that looks like it could almost be perpendicular to the ground.
This is a jukugo word and uses the on'yomi of the kanji. You haven't learned this reading yet for 崖 though, so here's a mnemonic to help you:
The sheer cliff has a guy (がい) trying to climb it. The cliff is way too dangerous to climb. As you look more closely, you realize it's your friend, Guy. You yell, "Don't, Guy! That's a 断崖!"
