The kanji means fear, and you can probably guess this is the adjective form of that. What causes fear? Something frightening, scary, or even dreadful.
This is pretty much the same as 怖い (scary), which you learned earlier, but this version is slightly less common and emphasizes a sense of awe or dread a little more.
This word uses a kun'yomi reading you didn't learn with the kanji. You could probably just remember this has the same reading as 怖い, but here's a mnemonic just in case:
What's the most frightening thing you can think of? A koala (こわ). Koalas are scary because they lie about being bears, and they carry dreadful koala diseases. One in particular… you know the one. Very frightening.
