Occurrences and feelings make up your circumstances.
事情 is used to describe the reasons or situation behind a particular event or action. If you can't go to a party, for example, you might explain your 事情 by saying that something came up or you aren't feeling well. And if your coworker is expecting a baby, you might consider her 事情 and help reduce her workload.
This is a jukugo word, which usually means on'yomi readings from the kanji. If you know the readings of your kanji you'll know how to read this as well.
